The Benefits of Meditation

Recent psychological research indicates that a person has between 40,000 and 60,000 thoughts about themselves and their lives each day, and more astonishingly, 80% of those thoughts are negative. Our inner mind chatter has manifested into this constant dialogue that never ceases to end. Meditation is a great tool to gain control over your thoughts!

One of the best ways to begin and learn to meditate is to relax, and concentrate on your breathing. Carmen Harra, who wrote the book "Everyday Karma," talks about the breath: "The breath is a powerful tool...it creates a bridge between the subconscious and conscious mind, and connects the mind and the body. When you sit and breathe deeply, your physiology will change, and both your mind and your body will relax and become open.

As with health and fitness, meditation is something that you've got to be consistent with. For some it's very difficult to quiet the mind and have the patients it takes to relax completely. For this reason begin with only 5 minutes of breathing the first few times you attempt meditation. Over time, you can build up to 15 minutes, and eventually longer. You'll find that when in a state of deep meditation, time flies.

Find A Place. First, find yourself a comfortable place to sit. You can sit in a comfortable chair with your hands resting comfortably on your legs, and feet flat on the floor.

Find The Time. You want to pick an opportune time that feels most relaxing for you. Some find that a few minutes upon wakening and a few minutes before bed are the most beneficial times.

Take 10 Breaths. Count ten breaths with your hand on your chest. This forces your attention on the rising and falling of the chest, along with focusing on the breath. During this time, it's not unusual for thoughts to come into your consciousness. Simply acknowledge whatever thoughts may arise, then release them by bringing your attention back to your breathing and your chest.

Continue To Breathe. At this point, you should be very relaxed and centered. Now take your hands from your chest and comfortably place them on your legs, either palms up, or palms facing down. Palms up helps you draw universal energy, while palms down helps circulate the energy within. At this point, continue to breathe, but without controlling the breath... just let it happen.

See The Room With Fresh Eyes. When you're winding down your meditation, say to yourself, "I only have right now, this moment," and open your eyes slowly without any thoughts of the future or past, just of this very moment. You'll find that everything is much more vibrant and new. If you walk outside in this state of mind, you'll feel the vibrancy in nature like never before. That's a state of "Being in the Now." Eckhart Tolle says: "With practice, the sense of stillness and peace will deepen. In fact, there is no end to its depth. You will also feel a subtle emanation of joy arising from deep within: the joy of Being."

The Most Important Muscle to Train...Your Brain

Emery Wellness Center's psychological approach to weight-loss will allow you to harness your brain’s power to improve your body’s overall appearance and function. This is very unique and different from your traditional diet/exercise programs. Most programs traditionally focus on the outside/physical aspect as the main goal and determining factor of your success. 95% of individuals attempting to lose weight via traditional diet or exercise will gain back all of the lost weight because nothing changed on the inside...Your Body is a Reflection of Your Mind.

As studies show, a healthy brain is the key to a better body and a better life. Your brain is the command and control center for your body, and your brain function is directly related to how your body looks, feels, and functions. You have to start by rejuvenating your mind.

For example, weight reduction is as much about understanding, commitment, and desire as it is about diet and exercise. A person will get more out of their efforts if they take the time and make the effort to learn about their body and how it works. Doing so allows an individual to exercise more efficiently and eat more effectively in an effort to reach his or her body transformation goals.

Focusing on the factors that created the change rather than the change itself, provides a “road map” of how the individual made the changes, and he/she can then refer back to that map at any point in the future for help and guidance. Throughout our program it is important that you remain focused and motivated. This is sometimes easier said than done. It is easy to be motivated when everything is new and you are excited about making changes in your style of living. When the new lifestyle becomes more “routine”, motivation may begin to dwindle. This happens to everyone at some point. Remain focused on your objectives, review your goals, and remain true to your beliefs. This is the true road to success.

People who have followed the Emery approach to physical conditioning often report that they “felt” better weeks before they were able to see any major physical changes. People have reported

  • Increased Energy
  • Renewed Zest for LIFE
  • Better Posture
  • Less Pain
  • Improved Self-Esteem
  • Improved Sleep
  • Reduced Health Costs
  • Many, more Positive results

These are signs that the body is changing on the “inside”. It is our attitude and behaviors that determine whether we gain or lose body fat. When we change our patterns of behavior, we change the course of our lives. We begin living life “in a new direction”.

Success in weight reduction is dependent on many factors, all of which are related to our mind. Having the courage to believe we can lose weight, or finding the determination to begin a healthy exercise and nutrition program is a reflection of the thoughts we choose to entertain in our minds.
